ABOUT

Josué Vera is a Puerto Rican NYC based multimedia composer and audio director. NYU alum, his multifaceted body of work supports and highlights the narrative structures of various mediums, including but not limited to film, podcast, and video games. Stories are about connection, about seeing the world through other eyes, and help us in our search for understanding. A story can create a common ground for people to share an experience. They’re a doorway to empathy, and he looks to ease that journey.

His work has been heard in National Geographic, Alaska Airlines, Amazon Prime, as well as film festivals like International Puerto Rican Heritage Festival, Apex Film Festival, and Female Eye Film Festival. His work on video games has been shown at events like Game Developers Conference (GDC), PlayNYC, Tokyo Game Show, and soon in MAGFest.

Vera has composed the soundtrack to multiple award-winning films. He worked on the feature film The Ladder, which is currently doing its festival run and appearing at festivals such as the Seattle Latino Film Festival, Fargo Film Festival, and Chain Film Festival. Esmeralda, a Colombian short film he made the music for, was a semifinalist at the Student Academy Awards, and a Telly Award Winner. His latest game, The Coldest Winter, won Best Pitch at GDC2025 and has just been showcased in Tokyo Game Show. Its demo is available for play on Steam.

Josué actively participates in industry events like GameSoundCon and Game Developers Conference, where he has spoken about community building in game audio and about his work on The Coldest Winter. He co-organizes community events, such as Game Sound Summit and NYC Game Audio. He’s taken part in workshops and programs, like the SCL New York Mentor Program, the NYU Screen Scoring Summer workshops (where he eventually worked as an intern), and the Milan Screen Music Program. He was awarded the prestigious "Elmer Bernstein Award for Outstanding Collaboration and Engagement in Screen Scoring" at NYU. Before that, he was awarded the “Roberto I. Ferdman Award” by Pro Arte Musical in 2020. In that same year, he was commissioned a piece for harp ensemble by the American Harp Society as part of the American Harp Society Inc. Grants Program. In 2018, he won the Pro Arte Musical Composition Award and his piece was premiered at the CBA of Puerto Rico.

Josué is now an adjunct instructor in the Screen Scoring program at NYU where he teaches Scoring Techniques for Video Games. Josué holds a Master's degree in Screen Scoring from NYU Steinhardt and a BM in Music Composition from the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico. Outside of music, Josué is an avid fan of the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, hiking, and hot chocolate.
